In 1616, the chance discovery of porcelain in the mountains of Arita on the island of Kyushu, Japan, transformed the region into a centre of outstandingly beautiful porcelain. Despite centuries of changing taste, the dedication of Arita’s craftspeople to creating the highest quality ceramics has remained unflagged.
In 2016, 16 teams of prominent international designers were brought together by creative directors Teruhiro Yanagihara and Scholten & Baijings to create a new style in Arita porcelain. The collections combine the varied cultural backgrounds of the designers with their interpretations of classic Arita-ware.
The Arita 2016/ collection harnesses the centuries old techniques of the craftspeople with the style and function of modern living.
